Eco Tip of the Week: Can it!

Eco tip submitted by FunkyMonkeyCompany

I save empty cans (coffee cans & veggie cans), interesting bottles and old cigar boxes for different things.

1. I use coffee cans and bottles as organizers. I make cozies out of old or orphaned socks. If they are interesting and colorful I don't cover them. (I only drink Bustelo so no need to cover).

2. I use old cans to make or serve deserts. I love making Can Cakes, they are big hit with guests and my girls. I bake right in the can and just ad decorative paper and twine - viola looks like it came from a high end restaurant. I got this idea from Sandra Lee, here's a link to her can cake recipe. I personally prefer banana walnut can cakes.

3. Old Cigar boxes are great for storage. I use them to display products during craft show table and special events.

4. A few years back we went to a Night Club in Columbia S.A. (have family there) and we went to a night club called "La Basura" (The Garbage). They served all their drink in clean empty cans and all their furniture in the club was made of recycled garbage cans, lids, tire rims and more. We already used unusual pieces out on our deck for seating such as a one of those step thing (from aerobic step class) and garbage cans turns upside down as tables. This inspired me to continue doing so. One mans trash is another man's treasure.

Eco Tip of the Week: Saving Energy with Dinner

Eco tip submitted by FashionGreenTBags

Turn on EVERY electrically operated object in your house then drive around for 3 hours in an old SUV (getting only 9-10 MPG) while leaving all of the lights and electrically operated object in your house to run/operate while you're gone.

"WHAT?" you ask, "Why would ANYONE do THAT?" Especially in this day and age when energy is more expensive and our awareness of the need to conserve energy is piquing, this idea seems preposterous and we would never even think of doing such a crazy thing.

Would it surprise you to know that a beef dinner for a family of 4 has that same impact on the Earth? Yep, by the time you add the cost of feeding, processing, shipping, etc. then the amount of gas passing while the cow lives the same amount of impact has occurred.

There are many of us who do not eat red meat but there are many who do. Want to cut down the energy load of the planet? Dramatically decrease the number of meals with beef as a primary ingredient. Consider using the beef as a kind of condiment for your veggies or increasing the amount of chicken/fish you eat (if you're not vegetarian or vegan already). Besides the health benefits you'll notice you will be saving a lot of energy as well.

Driving around a low mileage SUV for 3 hours with all things electrical running in your house as you're out IS absurd. What do you think of that steak dinner now (energy wise, that is)?

Eco Tutorial: Homemade Remedies

Submitted by bululustudio
Visit the Bululu Studio blog

I'm all about tips, I enjoy using and learning new tips and especially if they are Eco friendly. I found a huge list of remedies that we all can make at home to treat insects and diseases on plants. This time I'm going to share them with you little by little, so this post would not get so long and boring, ...he he:

Home-made soap solution for insect control on plants:

You'll need:
Baby shampoo
Water
Empty gallon bottle (you can reuse the empty gallon of milk)
Empty Spray Bottle

Instructions:

Mix 2 tablespoon of baby shampoo in 1 gallon of water.

Water the plants the day before the soap spray application to prevent damage. Test the spray solution on a small area of the plant. Wait 2-3 days and check for any damage. reduce potential injury by rising plant with fresh water a few hours after the soap spray application.

Note: Use a maximum of 6 tbsp. per gallon on water. Through coverage of the pest is necessary. Avoid using soaps on plants with hairy leaves or with very thin waxy coverings on the leaves.

I hope you can put in good use this tip for your own garden.
